How to Paint Cabinets

Painting kitchen cabinets, or any cabinets in your home or office is a great way to give your kitchen or bathroom an instant upgrade. Whether you want to do it yourself or hire an interior painter, there are many options when it comes to painting and refinishing cabinets.

Painting cabinets can be a DIY project if you have the time and patience for it. When it comes to refinishing your cabinets, the trick is all in the prep work. If you don't take the time to properly prepare your cabinets before applying paint, you could end up with a sloppy looking project that won't last. A professional painter will tell you that proper preparation is key when it comes to achieving a smooth, durable finish.

The first step should be cleaning and sanding the cabinet surfaces. Cover any exposed hardware with tape and make sure any residue or dirt is removed from each surface before painting. Make sure to fill in any holes or cracks with wood putty, then lightly sand them down until they're smooth again. This helps promote adhesion so your paint sticks better once applied.

Once everything has been properly prepared and cleaned, it’s time for a primer. Paint primer helps protect your cabinets from peeling or chipping, as well as blocking out dampness or oil that may be present in the wood already. It also provides a better surface for the paint to adhere to and will ensure your final product looks neat and polished once you’re finished. Primer helps to ensure that the paint sticks properly to the cabinet surface. Depending on how well your cabinets were cleaned or sanded prior to painting, it may take two or three coats of paint primer before they are ready for color. Applying too many coats will not cause any harm in most cases; however, too few could leave you with empty spots where the paint won't adhere properly.

The finish coat of paint plays a crucial role in this process. It not only provides that all important protective layer, it also adds to the overall look and feel of your refinished cabinet. When considering what kind of finish coat to use on your project, there are several things to consider. First, you'll want to make sure it is compatible with the type of paint being used – either oil- or water-based. You'll also want something that is easy to apply and will stand up against frequent cleaning and wear-and-tear over time. Finally, don't forget about color – choose one that will help create the desired look for your cabinet!

When selecting paint for your cabinet project, make sure it is specifically designed for refinishing furniture. This type of paint will adhere better to surfaces than regular wall paints since they are formulated with strong binders that stick firmly and resist chipping and peeling over time. Some paints even come with additives like mildew-resistant formulas which is especially important if the cabinets are located in humid areas such as bathrooms or kitchens.  We often recommend a good Sherwin Williams or Behr paint to achieve the quality finish that you desire.

Congratulations! After hours of work, you have finally refinished your cabinets. You started by removing all the hardware and sanding down the surface of the wooden cabinets. Then you carefully applied a few coats of paint and, voila, your cabinets are looking as good as new.

You can now sit back, relax and admire all your hard work. Refinishing cabinets is not an easy task - it takes time to make sure that everything looks perfect. All that effort has paid off though; your freshly painted cabinets give off a feeling of accomplishment and pride in what you have achieved through sheer perseverance and dedication.
